“Norm” from Cheers Passes Away

George Wendt

George Wendt, best known for playing Norm Peterson on the long-running sitcom Cheers has died. He was 76.

Wendt widely recognized for his role as Norm Peterson on the NBC sitcom Cheers (1982–1993). His portrayal of the lovable bar regular earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Wendt attended Rockhurst University, where he earned a degree in economics. He later joined The Second City, Chicago’s famed improvisational comedy troupe, which launched his career in entertainment. Before Cheers, he appeared in films such as Airplane II: The Sequel (1982) and Fletch (1985), and later starred in The George Wendt Show (1995). His film credits also include The Little Rascals (1994), Spice World (1997), and Santa Buddies (2009).

Wendt was known for his affable, everyman persona, which made him a fan favorite. He was married to actress Bernadette Birkett, who provided the voice of Norm’s unseen wife, Vera, on Cheers. He was also the uncle of actor Jason Sudeikis.

Wendt’s family said he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
