ABOUT MYRTLE BEACH FOOTBALL

The Seahawks are one of the more successful high school programs in the Palmetto State, having one eight state championships (1980, 81, 83, 84, 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2018). Shaw is largely credited with getting the program going as he won the first four titles for the program in the 1980s.

Shaw had a record of 223-77-2 as the coach at Myrtle Beach and led his team to the playoffs in 23 of his 25 seasons as the head coach at the Beach.

The stadium was named in Shaw’s honor after his death in 1994.

Current head coach Mickey Wilson has led the program since 2009 when he was promoted from offensive coordinator. He owns three of the titles (2010, 2013 and 2018). He has an overall record of 146-47 at the school.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, who led the Fighting Irish to the 2012 BCS National Championship game, is among the more noteworthy recent football alums. Former North Carolina receiver JJ Jones and current South Carolina quarterback/athlete Luke Doty also played high school football at Myrtle Beach along with current Clemson running back Adam Randall.

ABOUT MYRTLE BEACH HIGH SCHOOL

The school originally shared buildings with lower grades but burned down in the middle of the 1946-47 school year and rebuilt west of North King’s Highway, northwest of the present intersection of U.S. 17 Business and 14th avenue north. In 1990, the school building and athletic practice fields (not Doug Shaw Stadium) were sold and it was re-developed into King’s Festival shopping center.

It was then relocated to its current location on Robert Grissom Parkway between 29th and 38th avenue north in fast-growing Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Noteworthy non-football alums include former NBA player Ramon Sessions, South Carolina assistant women’s basketball coach Khadijah Sessions, the late character actor Anthony James and author and national security expert Steven Metz.
